PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS

Jerry has been teaching photography since 1999. He was workshop coordinator and gallery manager for acclaimed photographer Galen Rowell in the late '90s and teaches photography at Pacific Union College in Napa Valley. He offers his students a proven learning process (lecture-demonstration-execution-evaluation) which helps demystify the technical and aesthetic challenges faced by today's outdoor photographer.

For all of our classes, expect some light/moderate hiking,
rough terrain, and the possibility of inclement weather. Field locations are determined by weather and light. While both film and digital photographers are welcome, our workshops utilize a digital workflow and projection. An SLR camera and a tripod are required.

Elderhostel Presents: Yosemite! Through the lens. A Photographic Exploration.
October 26-30, 2008. Starting Price: $832
. For adults 55 yrs+.

Jerry has joined with Elderhostel, in association with California State University/Fresno, for this exciting educational opportunity in the heart of Yosemite National Park. Set in California's Sierra Nevada range, Yosemite is referred to as the crown jewel of the National Park system. The park offers a changing spectacle of unique glacially-carved valleys, granite monoliths, lush meadows, thundering waterfalls, and deep alpine lakes at any time of year.

"Join Jerry Dodrill, a professional photographer and former assistant of Galen Rowell to learn how to use your digital camera’s features with confidence and take your shots to the next level. Follow in the footsteps of Ansel Adams as you take aim at Yosemite’s famous landmarks. Discover how to utilize visual story-telling techniques and incorporate motion into your photography. Learn the secrets to making perfect exposures and read and utilize a histogram. Sessions discuss the elements to controlling depth of field and the use of light meters and tonal range limitations. Group critiques and discussions relay creative feedback on your photography. Learn about the park’s natural history and enjoy lunch at the historic Ahwahnee Hotel Grand Dining Room."

Participants must bring their own digital camera. Walking up to 4 miles per day on photo excursions on mostly level terrain. Walking approximately 200 yards from lodging to dining hall and conference rooms. Participants may want to bring a flashlight, as the walkways are not well lit at night. This program includes accommodations at Yosemite Lodge and all meals.
